Duties and Responsibilities: 

Under the direction and supervision of the director, a 4 year-old preschool teacher shall provide direct care and supervision to children, ages 4-5, at the center.  This involves attending to the developmental growth and needs of children and planning academic activities to include in weekly lesson plans.  A preschool teacher will be responsible for providing quality responsive care in the best interest of a specific child’s needs.  A preschool teacher will engage children in developmentally appropriate activities to help students learn socially, emotionally, and academically.  Preschool teachers shall visually observe aides whenever aides are working with children.

Applicants should have a positive attitude, be flexible, friendly, and possess a love for working with children. 

Preschool teachers shall participate in professional development and in-service trainings provided by the owner/licensee.

Position Supervised by: 

The Preschool Teacher is supervised by the Directors of Brighten Academy Preschool who are responsible for assigning duties, performance evaluations, and making recommendations for professional improvements.

Work Year/Hours: 

This is a twelve month, 40 hours per week, hourly position, work schedule is varied for each teacher (schedule range is 6:30am-6:00 pm).  Seniority is what earns an earlier schedule.  Newly hired teachers can expect to work 9:00am-6:00pm unless a different shift is needed by directors for adequate coverage. Starting pay rate is $18/hr.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum requirement is to have at least 6 Child Development units completed to begin employment. Once hired, the requirement would be to enroll in 3 additional Child Development units for the upcoming semester until a total of 12 Child Development units are completed. Once 12 units are completed, you are considered a “fully-qualified” teacher. Below is the requirement as listed in the Title 22 Regulations put forth by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Divison:

  • Prior to employment, a preschool teacher shall have completed, with passing grades, at least 6 postsecondary semesters or equivalent quarter units of the education requirement specified in (b)(1) below; or shall have obtained a Child Development Assistant Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
    • After employment, a teacher hired under (a) above shall complete, with passing grades, at least two units each semester or quarter until the education requirement specified in (b)(1) below is met.
  • To be a fully qualified preschool teacher, a teacher shall have one of the following:
    • Twelve postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development completed, with passing grades, at an accredited or approved college or university; and at least six months of work experience in a licensed childcare center or comparable group childcare program.
      • The units specified in (b)(1) above shall include courses that cover the general areas of child growth and development, or human growth and development; child, family and community, or child and family; and program/curriculum.
      • Experience shall be verified as having been performed satisfactorily, at least three hours per day for a minimum of 50 days in a six-month period, as a paid or volunteer staff member under the supervision of a person who would qualify as a teacher or director under this chapter.
    • A current and valid Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with the appropriate age-level endorsement issued by the CDA National Credentialing Program of the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition; and at least six months of on-the-job training and/or work experience in a licensed childcare center or comparable group childcare program.
      • A CDA credential shall show the appropriate preschool or infant/ toddler age-level endorsement to qualify an individual for employment in a preschool or infant care center.
      • A CDA credential is valid for three years from the date of award. A renewal may be granted every five years thereafter upon approval by the CDA National Credentialing Program.
      • Experience shall be verified as having been performed satisfactorily, at least three hours per day for a minimum of 50 days in a six-month period, as a paid or volunteer staff member under the supervision of a person who would qualify as a teacher or director under this chapter.
        • Individuals who possess a CDA credential may have also completed the required six months of work experience specified in (b)(2)(C) above. This work experience shall be verified to confirm that the experience requirement has been met.

Once hired, Human Resources will meet with you to arrange completion of :
  • Criminal Record Clearance (fingerprinting through DOJ, FBI, and Child Abuse Index)
  • Health Screening and TB test within 1 year
  • Immunization Record including Measles, Pertussis, and Flu vaccines (flu waiver is available)
  • Completion of Online Mandated Reporter Training (AB 1207) – to be updated every 2 years
  • Copy of Driver’s License in the event of transporting children
